Everyday, millions of plastic bags find their way into landfills around the world. Millions. I haven’t done the math, but I’m pretty sure that’s too many to be sustainable for much longer. And that’s just the plastic bags. What about the televisions and cell phones and clothes and fast-food trash and old toys and last year’s patio furniture and….and…
Yes. And. That’s the problem, there are too many ‘ands’. We live with a ‘disposable’ mindset and have been led to believe that the earth’s resources, as well as its landfill space, are infinite. Sorry to have to be the one to say it, but, ummm…they’re not.
We all know things have to change. That we can’t keep on truckin’ down this road we’re on. A detour is not only necessary, it’s inevitable. So either we choose it, or it’s chosen for us.
But here’s the thing – it’s not as hard as it seems. If you ask yourself, ‘How can we possibly fix this problem, how can we change the attitudes and habits of billions of people?” Well, yeah, that’s hard.
But if, instead, you ask yourself, “What is one small, simple thing I can do today that might help reduce the waste I produce, or the size of my carbon footprint?” All of a sudden things seem a bit more manageable, don’t they?
See, you don’t have to solve everything. Just one tiny little thing will do. And if we all did that, if we all made small efforts and were more mindful of our impact and encouraged the people around us to do the same and taught our children to think about these issues and…and…
Now the ‘ands’ start working in our favor. And that’s the way I like it. How about you?
